> > > D O O M Doom / The Ultimate Doom [★★★★★] Even after all this time, the game takes me back to the good old days every time I play it. The music, the atmosphere, it all holds up even now. Level design is also nice here, even in the additional hardcore "Thy Flesh Consumed". I highly recommend you to play it with 'Chocolate Doom', a port that simply makes it run without DOS without any real enhancements. ___________________________________________________________________________ Doom II [★★★] Well, unexpectedly, I actually didn't like this one at all. I have no negative memories of it from my previous playthroughs, but at the same time, I couldn't remember a single level besides the Icon of Sin and Barrels 'o Fun. Having played it again (for the 3rd? time) I can say that it's easily because half the levels are shit, they are not fun at all. I hated "Downtown", I hated "The Chasm" and a couple of other blocky city-like levels. Everything about the game screams that it was rushed, from the reused assets that don't fit earth at all (futuristic or not), to the maps and finally the lack of a boss (the Icon of Sin is just a wall texture - there's no cyberdemon or spider mastermind equivalents in Doom II). Even the bonus levels are lame, they're just modified wolfenstein levels. Replaying Doom was very fun and brought back many memories, replaying Doom II made me realize why I barely remember it. Sandy Petersen has already been criticised for his design choices before, but like I said, the maps are only half the problem. ___________________________________________________________________________ Final Doom [★★★★★] It's so good. TNT Evilution in particular, with it's music, level design quirks and general style, it felt like a breath of fresh air after the dull maps of Doom II. As a kid I decided not to play 'The Plutonia Experiment' because I thought it would be too difficult, but having finished it on Ultra-Violence now I must say It's not nearly as tough as I thought it would be. Plutonia seems to have, generally, a crazy number of enemies per level. That, paired with a penchant for archviles and pain elementals, aswell as armies of sniping hitscanners, makes it difficult and forces you to to strategize. Do you save scum? Run for your life? Snipe them back from afar? I even gave up my beloved arrow keys for a WASD+Mouse setup that I've never used in classic Doom. Nevertheless, Plutonia to Evilution is what Doom 2 is to Doom 1. It's better than Doom 2 in every aspect (especially level design) but I did feel like I was stuck looking for switches and figuring out how to progress more in Plutonia than in Evilution. Anyways, I highly recommend both. They're amazing. And don't forget the custom plutonia soundtrack!
